Our client is a Colorado contractor installing basement egress windows and window wells, and cutting concrete with fume-free hydraulic equipment. The company has operated for more than a decade, is fully licensed and insured, handles all permitting itself, and works across the Denver metropolitan area and the Front Range.
The demand this business serves is not discretionary. Colorado building code requires an egress window in any basement bedroom or living space, with a minimum clear opening of 5.7 square feet, at least 24 inches of height and at least 20 inches of width. A homeowner finishing a basement, a landlord bringing a rental to code and a seller clearing an inspection all have to have the work done, unlike most residential trades, where a homeowner can put the job off indefinitely.
Crews work from a single location with no showroom or retail premises. A typical project runs four to seven thousand dollars and most installations are completed in one to two days, from free estimate through permitting, excavation, installation, cleanup and final inspection. Because the company holds its own permits, the homeowner deals with one contractor rather than coordinating an excavator, a concrete cutter and a window installer. The second service line, hydraulic concrete cutting, makes the egress work possible, since the opening has to be cut through a foundation wall, and it also sells on its own to general contractors, remodelers and commercial customers. Hydraulic rather than gas-driven equipment runs inside an occupied house without fumes, which rules out a good deal of competing equipment.
